Background Noise

I’ve never been one of those writers with books that have soundtracks. I’ve always loved the idea of it, but always thought how do people concentrate? Surely they have to drown out the words out loud so they can hear the voices in their head?

Note: Yes, I hear voices, and a writer is the only socially acceptable person to admit this.

Recently though I’ve started to write downstairs. Maybe it’s to be with the others in the household, maybe it’s because the living room is the warmest place to be, I don’t know. But I set my laptop and I up at the table, supportive cushion at my back because, yes, it has come to that as I get older, a steaming cup of tea by my side.

And then grit my teeth as the strains of the TV interrupt the sweeping romance or hi-lari-ous comedic scenes I’m attempting.

The solution: a pair of amazingly comfortable headphones and a Spotify soundtrack.

Next problem? I found myself singing along to Ed Sheeran or Ariana Grande instead of paying attention to my characters. An hour passes and I find I wrote maybe twenty words, or worse one of my characters spontaneously burst into Galway Girl. Clearly the thing was to not listen to songs I knew.

Classics don’t work for me. Big band stuff worked for a while until I started to tap my feet and nod my head and shift my booty in my seat to the beat.

And then I typed in Relaxing Songs on Spotify and lo and behold, there was a playlist. Some songs I know, but most I don’t and their tempo is just enough so that they don’t have me snoozing or bopping along (most of the time). It’s perfect background, and for the odd romantic moment, there’s the odd romantic melody.

Success! Now I have nothing to blame any writer’s block on.

Hang on. Why was this a good idea again?

What do you guys think? Do you like writing or reading to music?

Release Day for His Command AND Excerpt

Days like these are why they invented chocolate.

It’s release day for His Command – and while I’m thrilled for everyone to catch up with Genies and the world of WFY, I’m also quietly terrified.

I wrote Her Wish in three weeks. Yep, three weeks. It flew out of my fingers like *ha* magic. I knew exactly who the characters were, knew exactly what would happen and how they’d get to their HEA.

His Command didn’t work like that. I thought Jax and Charlie were stubborn, but, boy, did I know nothing until I met Ryder and Hailey.

This book was better because of them and harder because of them. It should’ve been easy: they compliment each other so well, there wasn’t any of that enemies stuff to get in the way. But because of who they both are, how hurt BOTH of them are, it took several drafts to realise where this story needed to go. It didn’t flow out; it was torn, one word at a time.

Both have pasts. Both protect themselves. And it was lovely and challenging to finally figure out (and write!) how they fall in love.

I hope you all enjoy their story as much as Jax and Charlie’s! There’s an excerpt at the bottom of this post to tease you, and here are a few snippets of the reviews I’ve already received:

“It’s official! I’m absolutely in love with Sophie H. Morgan and her genies.”

“The author made this a well rounded tale with emotional content as we learned much more about Ryder and his life so far.”

“Hailey and Ryder were wonderful together, bringing plenty of witty banter, sweet moments and magic between the sheets.”

“I can’t not mention Ryder’s Handler, Luka, who had me howling with his observations on love and verbal sparring with WFY’s Director, Clare.”

“One of the best parts of this story was learning the different layers of the hero & heroine.”

He’s a genie. She’s a mortal.
He’s a flirt. She’s definitely-certainly-absolutely done with charming men.
What happens when this playboy runs across the one woman who doesn’t fall under his spell?
Magic of course.

Hailey has been given the chance of her career. All she has to do is plan and execute the perfect society wedding and she’ll get the promotion she’s been working towards. Too bad the groom is her ex-boyfriend. Ryder hates seeing a damsel in distress and with a little genie magic is determined to make the sexy Miss Hailey have a little bit of fun. All she has to do is follow his lead and she’ll get everything she’s ever wished for.

Read on for a taste…

“Now onto my other proposal.” Ryder’s voice slipped in between beats of her heart, tripped the detonator switch.

She dared a glance upward at his beautiful face. God only knew what he was going to suggest now. “Uh-huh…?”

“I want to help you have more fun. Sort of a thank you for helping me out with Leo’s party. Good Samaritan kind of thing.”

“I’m getting a wish out of it.”

“So think of this as an added bonus. I like you.” He sounded almost surprised about it. “I want to see you…blossom.”

“This is because I told you about what Kate said, right?”

“Maybe.” His grin was slow. Dirty. Only he could make a smile dirty. “C’mon. Let me show you how to have fun.”

“For the love of…” She shook her head. “I. Have. Fun.”

“Name me one thing in your life right now that’s fun.”

Damn it.

She glared. “I watched Hart of Dixie last night with a glass of wine.”

“Whoa. I’m sorry, I was wrong, you wild thing.”

Her glower upped a notch. “Just because you don’t think it’s fun.”

“You need to be out with the people. Real people. Taking some risks, setting yourself some challenges. You know, spontaneous fun.”

Spontaneous. She knew not of what he spoke. Must be that thing Ethan said she could never do. God, even Ryder, who’d known her all of one week, could see how pathetic she was.

“You’re sad again.”

“Cut it out.” She released the chair and folded her arms in defense. “Maybe our ideas of fun don’t mesh.”

“Or maybe you’re too chicken.”

“Yep.” She nodded. “So now we’re decided on that –”

“Come on.” A laugh was in his voice as he protested. “Hailey, you’re planning your ex’s wedding. I’d say you could use an injection of ridiculous, irresponsible fun.”

“Okay, if this ‘injection’ is another name for your penis, I’m throwing you out.”

His laugh was stronger this time, brown eyes aglow. “I’d like to think I’m a little more sophisticated than that.”

She eyed him, the crinkles around his eyes as he grinned. Before she could help herself, she said, “What kind of fun?”

That dimple creased his cheek as he waggled his eyebrows. “Intrigued?”

“No.” Maybe.

“Hmm. Well,” he said, leaning in, bracing himself on the table so his muscles bunched. “For it to work, and I have to state this upfront, you’d have to do as I say.”

She shot him a look drowning in wry humor. “Good one.”

“I’m serious. You’ve had control – too much, if you ask me – over your life and look where it’s got you. Planning your ex’s wedding and staying home every Saturday night with the saddest eyes I’ve ever seen.”

Her mouth dropped. The blunt honesty of the man… They should study him in some museum.

“For my plan to work, you’d have to listen to me. Take commands.”

“Did we time travel to the eighteen hundreds where you think I’ll actually say yes to this crap?”

He laughed. “Not about everything,” he said as if that was crazy. “Just the things that relate to fun.”

Okay, he was insane if she thought she’d blindly follow orders. Like she’d be interested in that kind of crazy. Yeah, she’d thought about the kind of man he’d insisted she needed, a man who’d take her control and push her to the edge, and sure, she could see his point about how being rigid with the reins hadn’t got her very far. But please. She wasn’t that wrecked.

Except she still heard Ethan’s words in her head.

Okay, she wasn’t sold, but in the interests of curiosity, Hailey waved a hand. “So tell me about this great plan I’ll be meekly following orders to the tune of.”

“Very simple. We do all the crap that scares you. That’s where following my orders comes into play.”

“Sounds great.” Heavy on the sarcasm, she smiled. “I hear and obey, Master.”

“I like the sounds of that.” His eyes on hers, he began moving around the table. Her heart picked up until the beats were one continuous line.

“What are you doing?” she managed as he leaned into her personal space. Electricity snapped, crackled, and yes, popped as he slid his hand into hers, tracing the sensitive in between areas of her fingers.

“Didn’t I tell you Genies don’t follow gentlemen’s rules?” He brought her hand to his mouth. His breath was warm as he nipped the pad of her index finger. She jumped. “C’mon, Hailey. Let me show you how to live life and not just watch. Let me show you how to have fun.”

Release Day for Her Wish

morgan_her-wishHER WISH finally hits the (e)shelves! I can’t tell you how excited I am for you to meet Jax and Charlie, and to dip a toe into my Genie world. Magic, mayhem and lots and lots of gorgeous men – as it should be!

Reviews are already flowing in, from authors to readers, and I’m thrilled to say everyone seems to be as caught with Jax and Charlie’s love story as I am:

Her Wish is fun, charming, and OMG, why haven’t I been reading Genie romances before now? Sophie H. Morgan’s wit and imagination made me an instant fan. I want a Genie of my own!” New York Times bestselling author Larissa Ione

“An epic romantic ride filled with magic and adventure.” – New York Times bestselling author Milly Taiden

” I adored Jax and Charlie, their story grabbed from the very start and held on tight throughout, their chemistry was perfection and I found myself swooning, laughing my socks off and brushing away a couple of little tears along the way.” – Goodreads reviewer, Nicola

“The snark and sass from Charlie, matched with the suave and smooth of Jax, just kept the smile on my face pretty much from the beginning of the book right up to the end.” – Goodreads reviewer, Claire Robinson

Go Team HER WISH! And look out for the second Playboy Genie book, HIS COMMAND, coming this summer ❤

This playboy has finally met his match…

Charlie’s sick of Genies. Too beautiful, too sure of themselves, too “celebrity”. And way too eager to grant wishes in the worldwide Lottery that entices mortals into buying tickets in the hope of winning their desires. Charlie would rather walk naked through Times Square than buy a ticket. Unfortunately, her friend springs for one in Charlie’s name – and it gets picked. She refuses to get sucked in and has no qualms about saying so to the famously arrogant, devilishly handsome Genie at her door. Sexy Blue Eyes will just have to take no for an answer.

Jax Michaels would love to take no for an answer. As the most famous Genie on the East Coast, known for his sex appeal, his cheeky interviews, and his roguish style of granting wishes, he only has to turn to the next in line to find a willing partner. After all, every woman wants him – except, apparently, Charlie Donahue, who throws back his charming words, sneers at his calculated grins, and refuses to even consider wishing. Jax isn’t a fool. He’s prepared to wash his hands of this infuriating, appealing female…until his Handler informs him that quitting is not an option. And if he can’t talk her into wishing, Jax will have to try playing a little dirty.

Happy New Year

So 2016 has come to an end. And I think I speak for most of us when I say thank the good Lord!

But, to be fair, while there have been some awful moments personally and on a nationwide scale – more deaths than you can count, BREXIT, illnesses and I don’t even think I have to mention the presidency election – there HAVE been some great moments too.

Namely, my Genies finding a home with St. Martins Press (Swerve)! I cannot wait for you guys to meet my gorgeous Genies and whoever else swaggers into my head 😉

I love a new year and the hope it brings. New year, new you, right? I don’t think I’d like to go that far, but I do look forward to what may come my way in 2017 and the rest of my family and friends – and you, my readers. Thank you so much for supporting me this far and beyond!

May 2017 bring everything you wish for 🙂 Happy New Year!

Another Five Stars for Whispers

Whispers300It’s been a while, and I’ve been focused on my new and fabulous Genies who I cannot WAIT for you to meet 🙂 They demand attention, the naughty boys, but it doesn’t mean I haven’t missed my other heroes – and you guys, of course.

In the meantime, as I had a free hour, I stumbled across this fantastic review from Fresh Fiction for WHISPERS that I had to share. Reviews like this don’t come along every day. The word ‘phenomenal’ is mentioned. Oh, yeah. 🙂

Here are a few more quotes to tease you:

“Sapphy and Nathe are perhaps one of my all-time favorite couples as the sparks fly instantly between them”

“My heart still breaks at some of the revelations that unfold in WHISPERS, even as I cheered for other equally heartwarming moments.”

“The Divided Kingdom series has the perfect blend of kickbutt action, superb world building, great character development, and a hot and heavy romance.”

Barb’s Writer Friends: Author Sophie H. Morgan

Barbara Meyers - Author

T2015-02-06 22.14.14 (4)oday I welcome author Sophie H. Morgan for a quick interview and a peek at her writing. Blog followers may recall that I have raved about the two books I read of her Divided Kingdom series. Check out my reviews of ASHES and WHISPERS on Goodreads or Amazon.  Welcome Sophie! First the Q & A:

Someone just gave you the best compliment ever.  What was it?

Your writing made me cry. (In a good way!) I would love to have a reader so involved with my story that it invokes an actual emotional reaction.

What is one thing that is guaranteed to make you laugh and one thing that will always make you cry?

My spaniels always make me laugh. They never mean to but they’re so ditzy, it’s hard not to!

When two characters in any romance book/movie finally get together. The gesture or speech that precedes the…

Interview: Barbara Meyers

Time is passing so quickly these days – especially when I’m on deadline to finish the second in my new Genie series! Anyway, I’ve taken time out today to bring you a fantastic author – and you may recognise the name from my rave review of her amazing romance WHAT A RICH WOMAN WANTS. It’s Barbara Meyers, everyone! *pauses for applause* 🙂

Welcome, Barbara. Thanks for appearing here today. 🙂 Let’s kick this interview off. Name something I wouldn’t be able to find out about you through Google.

Who my first serious boyfriend was. See? Google doesn’t know everything.

Lol. Very true!

Can you tell us a little about this book (which I absolutely LOVED)?

28268227Ah, the haves and the have nots crash into each other. For this book I drew a lot on my experience of living in Naples, Florida for thirty years. There is a lot of extreme wealth in that town. But money doesn’t insulate Lesley from infidelity and betrayal. In fact, there a lot of things money can’t buy. Like integrity or good health. Niko has learned this the hard way. The question becomes can Lesley give up society’s expectations of her and choose the happiness she finds with Niko?

Trust me – it’s a question you guys will want answered. For more, you can find my review here.

Do you have a dream cast for this book?

Oh, I’m horrible with remembering names of actors and actresses although I got a lot of 396280.jpggood suggestions from readers at a Facebook party a while ago. I bet Rachel MacAdams could be Lesley. She seems to adapt to whatever role she’s given easily. Other suggestions were Kate Hudson aWilliam-Levy-william-levys-fan-club-32400163-346-506nd Naomi Watts. They might be too old, though.

Niko? William Levy maybe.

I have an image in my head of what my heros look like, but when I try to find photos of who would fit the role later, I’m usually stumped. My imagination is apparently so much better than reality!

I’d like to live in your imagination then! 😉 I’ve never heard of William Levy, but after studying his photos on Google, I’m a new fan.

What is your favourite part of writing?

The creative aspect of playing the “what if?” game as I start a story and then seeing the characters come to life.

Yeah, that’s amazing. If they play nice. Mine sometimes collapse or run around, flailing. 🙂

What other projects are you working on?

Currently editing a romantic comedy entitled Cleo’s Web which I hope to release fall 2016. On the back burner are two stories: one about a former adult film actress who relocates to small town Iowa and the other about a dating expert and a celebrity heartbreaker.

Intriguing, especially the dating expert and celebrity heartbreaker. 🙂 Sounds promising! Can’t wait for all of them.

Who are your biggest influences in how you write?

I never understand this kind of question. I’ve had other writers critique my work over the years. There are authors I certainly admire and would like to emulate their success. But I don’t know what influences how I write. One person I always listen to who gives me feedback about my works in progress is my daughter. She is brutally honest and very in tune with the marketplace. She instinctively knows what works in fiction and what doesn’t.

An honest perspective is something very valuable indeed! I always have to take a breath before I get my critiques back 🙂

What one book would you reread over and over again?

I rarely reread books these days. In high school, however, I reread Gone With the Wind numerous times. I might have read Jane Eyre more than once. Sometimes now, I’ll pick up one of my own published works just to look for a line or two to use for promotion and I’ll get caught up in reading it. I did that with A MONTH FROM MIAMI the other day and kept thinking to myself, “This is so cute!”

LOL. That is the best feeling if you get wrapped up in your own book. 🙂 Now for a bit of fun. What flavour of ice cream best describes you?

Well, Rocky Road would certainly describe my writing journey thus far!

Ha. I think most writers could relate. 🙂

To end, tell me your best pickup line.

“Should I leave room for cream?” (I’m a barista serving coffee by day and I haven’t used a pickup line in 36 years.)

That’s better than my initial thought of where that pickup line was going… LOL.

Thank you so much for appearing today, Barbara. Looking forward to all your new projects – and if you guys are interested in Barbara’s previous works, here are the links! 🙂 Have a great one.

Release Day Interview: Brenda Huber

I’m very lucky today to be able to share the great thrill of an author’s release day, the day we send our babies off to the world to be loved or judged – hopefully the former. My guest today is the fantastic Brenda Huber, author of the Chronicles of the Fallen series (one I heartily recommend!) Book 4 in the series releases today! Let’s get down ‘n’ dirty with her, shall we? 😉

Hi, Brenda! Congratulations on your new release and I’m so pleased you could stop by on your busy, exciting day! Let’s start this interview by telling us something I wouldn’t be able to find out about you through Google.

Well, that’s certainly a loaded question! Lol. Um, I’ve held some interesting jobs. I was a youth counselor at a residential treatment facility. I’ve also worked as a bank teller, a jailer for the Sheriff’s Department, and a manager at a fashion boutique. And all the while I dreamed of writing.

Wow, a jailer? I definitely see a romance there. The bad boy accused of a crime etc. Plenty of material for your writing. 🙂 Speaking of, can you tell us a little bit about Demon of Vengeance?

Demon of Vengeance is book four in the Chronicles of the Fallen Series. Let’s just say it isn’t for the faint of heart! Lol.

FullSizeRender (6)Our heroine Phoebe is the independent no nonsense sort. She is a professor by profession, and a hereditary Guardian of one of the sacred relics that could bring about the apocalypse. She has a legacy to uphold and her family honor to restore. The last thing she is looking for is romance. But our sexy hero Sebastian is very…well, determined, if you get my drift.

In a nutshell, Sebastian is a reformed (sort of) demon who is working on redeeming himself and returning to his Heavenly home. He and his compatriots have uncovered a plot to overthrow Lucifer. Now, they hold no loyalty to the dark prince, however, if Lucifer falls, the barrier between earth and hell would crumble and humankind would perish…which would seriously undermine Sebastian’s plans of earning forgiveness. In the process of saving humanity, Sebastian meets his match in a beautiful professor with secrets of her own.

Picture it…exotic locations, steamy romance, an age old nemesis, epic battles, and the fate of all mankind. This book has it all!

Phew. *fans self* Sounds exciting in every sense 😉 And definitely on my TBR list. I love sparring between the hero and heroine. Leads to some great chemistry 🙂

If you could make a movie out of Demon of Vengeance, who would be your dream cast?

A dream cast? What author doesn’t go into this kind of proposition without some kind of…template in his or her head? A face they see when they close their eyes as they are imagining?alexander_skarsgard_-21happy-birthday-chris-8-things-you-didn-t-know-about-mr-hemsworth-aka-thor-god-of-thund-560217

So, for Sebastian I see… Chris Hemsworth, maybe. Or Alexander Skarsgard. A real Viking/Norse god type. Lol

And Phoebe, hmm, that’s a little tougher. Kate Beckinsale?

We think alike (and I’m sooo glad :)) I’m loving the inspirations. Kate B is always my go-to for sexy, kick ass heroines, and I’ve never met a woman who didn’t drool a little over Chris H. Those eyes…

Sorry, let’s move on! What’s your favourite part of writing?

That moment when you’re so deep in painting the scene, and it all feels so REAL that when you finish and you look up and drag in a deep breath, there is actually a moment of disorientation. A moment where you completely forgot where you are, forgot WHO you are.

It’s at that moment that I know the book I’m working on is good. Really good. It’s at that moment I personally make the connection.

I ❤ that. When it’s flowing an all, it’s better than a drug. Or cookies. Which, same thing in my house LOL.

What other projects are you working on?

Aside from book five in the series? Lol. No, seriously. I’m working on a new book right now completely separate and away from the Chronicles of the Fallen series. It still hasn’t given all its secrets up to me. But I keep chipping away at them. (I’m completely a pantser!) I don’t want to give away too much too soon. Think something along the lines of…strong willed heroine with a controlling, obsessive ex meets sexy protective modern day cowboy. I’m very excited.

Intrigued! Love me some cowboys. 🙂

Who are the biggest influences on how you write?

The first romance novel I ever picked up was Captive Bride by Johanna Lindsey. I was 14. I’ve been a loyal fan ever since, own every book she ever wrote! Lol. But I don’t think I could pinpoint one favorite. I love to read so I have many, though I tend to gravitate to romance. Paranormal, historical, western, suspense. Any and all romance. And author-wise..Kresley Cole, Lara Adrian, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Nora Roberts, Karen Marie Moning, Lisa Jackson, Stephanie Lauren’s, Kay Hooper, Linda Lael Miller, Theresa Medeiros, Rebecca Zanetti….I could go on and on.

I think you pretty much everyone you’ve listed is on my bookshelf! But there are a couple new ones there *runs away to add to list*

So out of all these amazing books, what one would you read over and over again?

I could take a photo of one of my bookcases, the one in my bedroom. I keep all my personal favorites in that one. Too many to count. Those are the ones I can, and have, reread. Most many times over. But if I had to name one… No, no. I can’t chose. Lol.

Wuss. 🙂 Not that I could choose…

For a little fun, what ice cream flavour best describes you?

Dark chocolate fudge brownie…oh,oh! With a swirl of sea salt caramel! Sweet but still a bit salty, smooth with hidden little surprises. Lol

Man, now I’m hungry 🙂 This has been a great getting-to-know you sesh – BUT just to end on, tell me your best pickup line.

I have no game! Lol But I do have dimples! So all I need is my smile. 😉

And that’s really all you need!

Thanks so much for stopping by on your exciting day, Brenda! And make sure you check out Demon of Vengeance at Amazon, or to keep up to date, check her out on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or her website 🙂 FullSizeRender (5)

Review: WHAT A RICH WOMAN WANTS by Barbara Meyers

I’ve read some really good books since my last review, but none more so than WHAT A RICH WOMAN WANTS by Barbara Meyers. The book is from the same publishing house as me, but features more of a contemporary romance vibe with the same great humour all Samhain Publishing books possess. If you like sassy humour and sexy times, this is the book for you:

Madre de Dios,” he muttered.

“What does that mean?”

“It means you should come with a warning label.”

What a Rich Woman Wants, Barbara Meyers

28268227I could end this review with just the above quote. It tells a reader everything they could want to know about this book. Humour? Check. Sauciness? Check. Romance that goes the distance? Ahh, but that’d be telling. 🙂

I didn’t quite know what to expect with WARWW. From the first few pages, I was drawn in by the author’s light, easy control of language, and liked both of the mains from the introduction. Leslie has to be in control; she’s a working mom with a father who’s had a severe stroke and a son she can’t relate to. Enter Nico, a working cop with a group he wants to raise money for, who rubs her angles and is possibly the most gorgeous man written into fiction. Seriously. He cares about children, he puts himself out for people, he’s funny and serious and just plain awesome. These were two characters I couldn’t wait to see get together.

But there’s more in it than simple romance. Mystery, intrigue, surprise after surprise hits the reader as you go through the pages (in my case quickly and into the wee hours), and all the while is the romance we came for. Class divide features but not heavily so, which I was glad about because it always depresses me when society women in romances think too much about what people think if they date ‘a commoner’. I can never respect them after that, but Meyers weaved just enough to gift the romance a credible obstacle.

This book surprised me in the best possible way, even to the end. I was left with a warm, happy glow that only the best romances give me. I will definitely be browsing her backlist.

2015-02-06-22-14-14-4Find the book on Amazon, the Samhain website, and other booksellers! And check out Barbara Meyers here 🙂
